Michael has already hit the Sex Beat racks, alighting on the ‘N’ section, from where he pulls out Napalm Death’s paint-stripping turn-of-the-millennium album Enemy Of The Music Business. Both Michael and Kaspar have their eye on Crawler, the brand new record from Bristol postpunk rabble-rousers Idles. There’s already a low-level power struggle brewing. “Wait – you’re paying us to go record shopping?” Kaspar Boye Larsen asks disbelievingly. If you go back to the first record and compare it to where we are now, you can hear how the band has developed its style, while keeping the signature sound.Today, Poulsen and bandmates Jon Larsen (drums) and Kaspar Boye Larsen (no relation, bass) are just regular record shop customers once more, albeit ones with 400 Danish krone (around £50) of Classic Rock’s money to spend on albums as part of our Record Store Challenge. “I was in a good place and mood while at home, and had a captive audience of myself… There are a lot of Volbeat signatures in it. “I wrote the whole album in three months,” says frontman Michael Poulsen. The album will feature the band’s recent singles, “Wait A Minute My Girl” and “Dragen Før.” The band’s newest song, “Shotgun Blues,” goes a little harder than those tracks, though, perhaps inspired by their recent cover of Metallica’s “Don’t Tread On Me.” While those previous two songs are very bluesy and sound right at home with Volbeat’s swing-oriented material, this one’s a straight-up metal track, with big, meaty riffs throughout.
Volbeat’s new record will be called Servant of the Mind, and will drop December 3rd via Republic Records. But now the band have dropped even bigger news: they’ll be releasing their eighth studio album later this year, and have a new single to boot. Last we heard from Danish Elvis-metallers Volbeat was that they were embarking on a co-headlining tour with Ghost in 2022.
